It’s almost December, which means the time to curl up on the sofa with a cup of hot cocoa (marshmallows included) in front of a heartwarming movie is fast approaching! We’re sure you’re also looking forward to playing the online slot games, holiday-themed, of course, which is why Mecca Games’ casino site has you covered for both, with our variety of online casino games and our list of top holiday movies, from classics to new releases!

Classics

White Christmas (1954)

Stars: Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney

Memorable quote: “My dear partner. When what’s left of you gets around to what’s left to be gotten, what’s left to be gotten won’t be worth getting, whatever it is you’ve got left!” – Phil Davis (Kaye)

Watching White Christmas has been a holiday tradition for millions of people for nearly 70 years. The 1950s classic offers a nostalgic storyline, real charm, and some catchy song-and-dance numbers. It follows two friends and former soldiers who decide to help their army general’s inn get some business by putting on a big show.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Stars: Jim Carrey, Christine Baranski, Jeffrey Tambor

Memorable quote: “Maybe Christmas [he thought] doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more.” – Grinch/narrator

A classic favourite among all ages, the 2000 adaptation of Dr Seuss’s book follows the story of the grumpy Grinch who lives in solitude just outside Whoville, and despises both the townspeople… and Christmas. Enter Cindy Lou Who, who believes adamantly in the spirit of Christmas, and makes it her mission to change his mind.

Elf (2003)

Stars: Will Ferrell, James Caan, Zooey Deschanel

Memorable quote: “It’s just nice to meet another human who shares my affinity for elf culture.” – Buddy (Ferrell)

It’s not Christmas until Will Ferrell puts on bright yellow stockings and starts frolicking through New York City, spreading the festive spirit! Funnyman Ferrell is on a quest to find his biological father after finding out that he is not, in fact, an elf. Like many of his films, Elf was an instant classic and received critical acclaim, along with five nominations and two awards, including the 2004 Golden Trailer title for “Best Comedy”.

So if you’re in the mood for a laugh a minute, Buddy the Elf’s your guy, and for all the jolly Christmas feels, Jingle Bells Power Reels is your slot!

The Man Who Invented Christmas (2017)

Stars: Dan Stevens, Mark Schrier, Patrick Joseph Byrnes

Memorable quote: “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of another.” – Charles Dickens (Stevens)

If you’ve seen any of the renditions of A Christmas Carol, you’re sure to enjoy this timeless tale of the journey that led Charles Dickens to the creation of it! As the plot of this 2017 film goes… in 1843, the British novelist reaches a low point in his career and becomes determined to turn things around by deciding to write a Christmas story. When his estranged parents come to stay with him, however, he finds himself dealing with the ghosts in his closet, which he must face in order to overcome his writer’s block.

The Man Who Invented Christmas won Heartland Film’s “Truly Moving Picture Award“ and MovieGuide Awards’ “Best Film for Families.” It also received six nominations, including for the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films’ Saturn Award for Best International Film in 2018.

New releases

Love Hard (2021)

Stars: Nina Dobrev, Lochlyn Munro, Harry Shum Jr

What’s a holiday playlist without a mushy romantic comedy to gush over? Love Hard follows the story of a hopelessly romantic LA journalist, Natalie Bauer, who swipes right on a dreamy guy from the East Coast, who calls himself Tag. In the true holiday spirit, Natalie decides to take a leap of faith and surprise her crush for the holidays, only to find out that she’s been catfished. But there’s still a chance at love, and she’s determined to have her kiss under the mistletoe this year!

Father Christmas Is Back (2021)

Stars: John Cleese, Elizabeth Hurley, April Bowlby, Talulah Riley

The holiday season is a time to come together with your family and loved ones, which for many, can be both wonderful… and challenging! This is the case in British movie Father Christmas Is Back, where four sisters reunite in Yorkshire, along with their families, both old and new, and a rather large bag full of mixed surprises and old hurts. For some relatable feelings and genuine laughs, this touching story should definitely be on your playlist. (And Kelsey Grammer has a bit part, which is worth a watch if you loved his Frasier.)

If you’d like to trade snow in for some island vibes, however, Aloha Christmas is the way to go.

The Princess Switch 3 (2021)

Stars: Vanessa Hudgens, Nick Sagar, Remy Hii

The scene is set: identical twins – a baker and a princess – trade places, and as you might imagine, the chaos (and romance) ensues. Hallmark meets Netflix in this film, and best of all – this is the third installment, making it the perfect sequel for a movie marathon! Start with The Princess Switch, before moving on to The Princess Switch: Switched Again, and ending with The Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star, which is out mid-November 2021.

Christmas on the Square (2020)

Stars: Dolly Parton, Jenifer Lewis, Treat Williams

The holidays just wouldn’t be complete without some classic carols, and who better to indulge us than the “Queen of Country”, Dolly Parton. In this Netflix Original, Parton shares the classic A Christmas Carol in an old-fashioned story about embracing the festive spirit, featuring original music and a welcomed dose of sentimentality.
